Test-Taking Strategies (Week One)
Instructor: Cheryl Phillips
Dates: Monday, July 21 to Friday, July 25
Time: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Grades: Rising 6th
This two-week course will give your child the opportunity to learn test-taking strategies and practice them on ISEE practice tests. The course will focus on assessment content areas and offer an opportunity for the students to reassess their strengths and weaknesses at the end of the course with a plan on what and how to prepare for the ISEE.
This course will be a great way for the students to go into their 6th-grade year identifying the areas to work on before taking assessments for next level schools. This will be a precursor for the ISEE course offered through St. Paul during the fall of the student's 6th grade year. Although the students can be registered for one or both weeks, it is highly encouraged that they attend the whole course to get the maximum out of the class.
Week One: The students will begin by taking a practice ISEE test. Then, the students will go over what is on the ISEE test, understand how questions are graded, what is sent to next-level schools, and how a school uses the score. The students will also learn strategies on how to take a timed test.
The content we will specifically work on week one:
-
Defining Vocabulary Skills
-
Verbal Reasoning (What does this look like and how to fill in sentence completion questions)
-
Practicing Verbal Reasoning
-
Adding and practicing Arithmetic and Algebra
-
Word Problems and Quantitative Reasoning Comparisons
Week of July 28
Test-Taking Strategies (Week Two)
Instructor: Cheryl Phillips
Dates: Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 1
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Grades: Rising 6th
This two-week course will give your child the opportunity to practice taking the ISEE test and evaluating their strengths and weak areas. The course will focus on assessment content areas and offer an opportunity for the students to reassess their strengths and weaknesses at the end of the course. This course will be a great way for the students to go into their 6th grade year identifying the areas to work on before taking assessments for next level schools.
This is not a replacement for the ISEE course offered through St. Paul during the students 6th grade year, but rather an opportunity to recognize and work on areas prior to the ISEE prep course. We highly encourage that students attend the whole course (both weeks) to get the maximum out of the class.
Week Two: The students will end the week by taking another ISEE practice test. The students will also be sent home with practice tests at the end of the session to use at home. The key to taking assessments is to become familiar with the layout and understanding what you will be assessed on.
The content we will specifically work on week two:
-
Reading Comprehension (how to scan passages instead of reading them, circling keywords and phrases, and getting familiar with the types of questions that will be asked)
-
Identifying what should be in an essay and practicing writing essays
-
Geometry (review and practice of geometry concepts)
-
PI, circumference, diameter, radius
