    National Day of Prayer

Faculty, staff and students joined hands on the Liddell track for the 2013 National Day of Prayer (http://nationaldayofprayer.org/). There was a short service of prayer for our nation and community and a time to lift up the work of the church, school and senior living center who share this precious piece of land in Nashville. The theme of this year's event is "Pray For America," emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator. The Scripture chosen for this year's theme is Matthew 12:21, which reads, "In His name the nations will put their hope.”

  • Harpeth Hall presents Pulitzer-Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout

Harpeth Hall will host a discussion and signing by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout at 7 p.m. on April 8 in the Frances Bond Davis Theatre on the Harpeth Hall campus. Ms. Strout will discuss her new release of Burgess Boys. Joining her in the conversation will be her Random House editor Susan Kamil. The event is part of the Salon@615 author series. Admission is free, but tickets are required. Reserve your ticket at www.harpethhall.org. (Click article title for more information.) When Ms. Strout set out to write her follow-up to Olive Kitteridge, a popular book club read, she revisited an old manuscript in which a fatherless family named Burgess were minor characters. Using an actual case in Maine as a model for one of the character’s legal troubles, her own time as both a Maine and New York local, and her expertise as a former lawyer, Ms. Strout brought these deeply human protagonists into the present day and made their story the crux of The Burgess Boys.

    2013 Talent Show - 4th, 5th, and 6th grades

Dear St. Paul Families, Greetings from the 2013 Talent Show Committee! Every year, we enjoy seeing the unique ways that God has gifted each student in this community. This event is an opportunity for outward talents such as the ability to sing, dance, and play instruments to be celebrated. To be included in the talent show, each child must audition before a panel. This panel will provide feedback to students regarding areas that may need to be adjusted or improved in order to fit within our vision for the talent show. If participants do not wish to make these adjustments, they will not be allowed to perform. To be clear, we expect all performances to have been thoughtfully prepared and/or practiced before now. We rely heavily on parents to discuss the importance of hard work and effort when developing one's talents. We will not allow acts such as lip-syncing, improvised dancing, or anything else which appears unrehearsed or hastily put together. (Click article title for more information.)

E.L.F. (Environmental Learning Fundamentals) JK-2nd Grades

Jr. Kindergarten through Second Grade students participated in E.L.F. (Environmental Learning Fundamentals) in the last week of February. This special annual event brings together students, volunteer parents, and teachers for an activity based learning session. The topic of this year’s class focused on Bible stories relating to weather. The theme verse was “Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens, and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.” (Psalms 36:5). The opening activity included a video of a choir creating the sounds of a thunderstorm using only their hands and feet. The children then imagined themselves as raindrops and went through an obstacle course that represented the four stages of the water cycle: precipitation, collection, evaporation, and condensation. After the obstacle course, the children enjoyed small group centers that incorporated Bible stories along with hands on activities. The children learned about wind as it relates to Moses and the parting of the sea – this was reenacted by the children with great enthusiasm! Tornados and hurricanes were additional weather events experienced by the children through miniature models. The children also learned about precipitation as they heard the story of Noah’s Ark. Finally, the narrative of Jesus calming the storm provided an opportunity for children to learn about clouds, lightning, and thunderstorms. St. Paul would like to offer a special thanks to the over 70 parent volunteers who helped our children learn about weather and its special role in the Bible and a special thank you to Mrs. Whitney Lytle for her leadership in this year's program.

  • RESPECT Contest Winner

In late October, the entire 5th grade took part in the RESPECT Contest. Sponsored by the Nashville law firm of Kinnard, Clayton, and Beveridge, the RESPECT Contest annually gives 5th grade students in any school located in Davidson County the opportunity to compose an impromptu definition of the word "respect" while also creating an illustration to go along with their definitions. Out of 1,200 entries from schools throughout the county, the entry by St. Paul Christian Academy student McGavock Cooper was selected as the best overall! With his first place win, McGavock received a cash prize for himself, and in addition Kinnard, Clayton, and Beveridge made a gift of $1,000 in McGavock's name to both St. Paul Christian Academy and the Nashville Food Project, an organization where McGavock had served as a Boy Scout. Congratulations to McGavock on a job well done and for having a heart that understands how to treat others.

    Book Discussion Friday, March 8

Calling all parents of readers and soon-to-be readers at St. Paul! The Parent Council wishes to extend a hearty invitation to a lively discussion of children's literature and how the American publishing market is meeting the literary needs of our young readers. We will take an excursion into the relational concerns of Harry Potter and see just how his circumstances reflect the realities of a Jane Austen heroine. From that we will carry on to discuss how St. Paul can be an avenue into literary discoveries of beauty and imagination through a new approach to our summer book sale. There are many wonderful and precocious readers at St. Paul - a mark of the strengths and outcomes of a St. Paul education. We wish to honor all of the children at St. Paul with a summer book reading excursion that fulfills their ever-growing capacity as reader, thinker, and creator. The event will be held on Friday, March 8, 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. in the C.S. Lewis Library. Christine Shih, a Jane Austen scholar and mother of first grader Meredith Shih, will lead this discussion and explain her vision for a new direction into summer reading through developing the creative imagination of our children. It is not a requirement, but if you wish to read in advance for this discussion, please refer to Jane Austen's novel 'Mansfield Park' and J.K. Rowling's novel 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.' There will be a few copies of each book available in the office up for purchase, so put on your reading glasses and mark your calendars for a valuable discussion on literature!

    Buttons Needed

This year will be the third year we will adorn the entry hall in McGuffey Hall with a piece of artwork to which every single student contributes. In thinking about our theme verse this year, 1 John 3:15, "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us..." we couldn't help but think about wanting to cultivate a heart for Christ in our students. We want them to know His love for them, and we want them to show love to each other. The image of knitting together strong hearts for Christ inspired us to think about an unconventional medium as far as art goes: buttons. We are going to work with each homeroom class to make hearts out of buttons! So... we need your help! We need tons and tons of buttons! Please put any buttons that you could donate to our project in a baggie, and your child can bring them to the front office where we will have a basket for our buttons. We thank you in advance for your help! We can not wait to unveil our hearts buttoned up for Jesus!

The White Squad should come on Wednesday, August 8 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The Blue Squad should come on Wednesday, August 8 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. During this time, we will have the girls try on sizes to see what fits them best and also send you home with care instructions for your uniform. Also, bloomers will need to be purchased at this time. The cost will be $10, and the girls will keep these for seasons to come.

In addition, we will be holding an important information parent/daughter meeting on Wednesday, August 15 at 3:20 p.m. in the Kuyper Conference Room. Here, we will give you additional information about practices and games, and we will be able to answer any questions you might have about the upcoming season. Football season usually runs through the middle of October. The Blue Squad will have practice each Thursday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The White Squad will practice on Mondays AND Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. On Fridays, the squads may wear their uniforms to school when there are football games that Saturday.
