Technology

We are in our 10th year of its laptop program, and were one of the first elementary schools in the nation to provide one-to-one technology access to our students.

Though the details have changed some through the years, our commitment to ubiquitous technology access has remained the same. Our program today consists of the following:

The entire campus is served through a wireless network, providing access from anywhere on campus. Objectionable Internet sites are blocked with a robust filter. Wireless printers are distributed throughout the campus for easy printing of assignments.

Kindergarten and First Grade

Apple iPads in each classroom, providing a technology center for each class.

Second Grade

A classroom set of 16 Apple MacBooks that are shared among the second grade classrooms.

Third Grade

Every student has an Apple MacBook computer to use.

Upper School (Fourth through Sixth Grades)

Every student has an Apple MacBook computer to use. Additionally, students in these grades are allowed to take their computers home in the evening.

In the Lower School (kindergarten through third grade), technology is used in a variety of ways to support teaching and learning. In kindergarten and first grade, students use Apple iPads in support of learning. The touch screens make technology use more accessible for these early learners. An assortment of applications are installed on the iPads at the teachers’ direction to support and enhance the learning concepts being addressed in the classroom.

In second grade, students begin the transition to computers. They use the Internet to enrich their studies. Students also make learning products with applications suited to their development. In third grade, students begin keyboarding. Time is set aside each week to practice typing. They also use the computer for Internet research, writing assignments, and creative learning products. Students also prepare electronic portfolios in grade two and three that include highlights from their year to share with parents.

In the Upper School (fourth through sixth grade), students use technology like all their other learning tools (books, paper pencils). As they move through their classes, their computers travel with them. Students are thus able to participate in lessons that utilize technology without the problem of computer access. Examples of technology use include Internet research, writing assignments, podcasts, presentations, and movie creation.

Teachers in all grades use technology to conduct online assessments in support of learning. Important information about student readiness and ability can be gained from these assessments, allowing teachers to better direct their energies in the classroom. Reading and writing are both assessed using technology. The writing assessments provide immediate feedback to both teachers and students, making this a powerful tool in improving writing.

Teachers also use technology to advantage in delivering lessons. The Internet, projectors, SmartBoards, etc. are used routinely in the teaching and learning process. Teachers also use technology to communicate and maintain their vital partnership with parents. Teacher websites keep parents informed about what is happening in the classroom through text, pictures, podcasts, and videos.
